BUSH HILL RANGERS –v- ILFORD COLTS

Today’s game was one I’ve been looking forward to for a few reasons. Firstly, it would be a match between first and second in the league, secondly, I believe that Ilford along with us try and play the game as I believe it should be played, eg: both teams like to pass it, and lastly this would be an opportunity for the boys to get revenge for the defeat the last time we played them!

Before the game kicked off I reminded the boys that the last time we played Ilford, they were the hungrier team and they were switched on straight from kick off and that we needed to be totally focused and committed from the start.

The game kicked off and for the first few minutes both teams tried to stamp their authority, and it wasn’t long before the Bush Hill Boys took control.  After a great battle in midfield the ball broke to Halil for our first shot.  The boys were showing a passion and determination, which Ilford struggled to cope with.  Our defensive unit worked together to limit Ilford to a couple of long range efforts. Our midfield and attacking force were flowing and our liquid movement and strength continued to create chances.  Midway through the first half Bush Hill had a throw-in in the Ilford half, Mohamed showed great strength as he turned and passed to Kash, who also showed strength and pace to round the keeper and slot the ball home, 1-0 to Bush Hill.  Ilford responded with another long range effort that was easily dealt with.  With moments to go to half time Ilford were pressing our area.  The ball was cleared to the half way line where Kash was roaming; he spun his marker and showed him a clean pair of heels as he raced away towards their goal. With two defenders and a goal keeper still to beat like a missile he was homing in on their goal. His team mates trying their hardest to keep up with him and offer him support, Kash pulled the trigger, the Ilford keeper seemed to have saved it, but Kash was not to be denied and after a scramble he forced the ball home, 2-0 to Bush Hill. The touchline erupted with celebration, the Bush Hill Boys hugged each other in delight! Everybody knew what a massive goal had just been scored, with Bush Hill two points clear of Ilford at the start of play today and with only two games remaining after today, surely there was no way back for the team that lost today.  Half time score 2-0 to Bush Hill.

At half time I explained to the boys that the job was not over, we must continue to be focused and determined in the second half.

As the second half kicked off Bush Hill carried on where they had left off in the first half.  The chances were coming thick and fast. I lost count how many times the ball was cleared off their line! For the majority of the second half it seemed that Ilford had had the stuffing knocked out of them.  The Bush Hill boys were winning their individual battles all over the park.  How we never added to our score I’ll never know!  The Ilford goal was living a charmed life. Final score 2-0 to Bush Hill.

At the end of the game in my team talk the first thing I did was thank the boys, not for the result but for their commitment and attitude in today’s performance. We have played well all season, but today there was something extra.  It was clear we are growing as a team.

Today’s Man Of The Match – Bush Hill Rangers Under 9’s Squad – You are showing me that you are listening and working hard in training and you are taking it to the game on a Sunday.

Well Done Boys!
